Although it probably took them a lot longer
than Microsoft would have liked, Rockstar have
finally made good on their guarantee of two
exclusive DLC episodes being released
exclusively to the Xbox 360.
As far as compilations go, Episodes from
Liberty City is a fine example of how to do it
right.

Unfortunately it can only be one hundred percent
recommended on the proviso that you haven’t already downloaded
the Lost and the Damned episode that came out ages
ago. Apart from the fact that it kicked ass, there isn’t a
reason to play The Lost and the Damned again and paying for the
downloadable content of the Ballad of Gay Tony is half the
price.
If you
haven’t played either though, there is only one thing
left to do and that is to buy a copy. Another reason
for getting a copy is because you don’t have to own a
copy of GTA 4 to play this disc. If you’ve already
completed GTA 4 and swapped it in, at least you can still
play, which you can’t do if you decide to download it.
Look what I
found...
Now the
only difference between owning the disc and just downloading
the Ballad of Gay Tony seems to be that you can’t listen to
Vice City Radio which only appears when you are playing the
disc version. Vice City Radio was great and lent that
‘Scarface’ quality to the whole chapter. If there were
characters that seemed like they were straight from Vice
City, it would be Gay Tony and company.
In the
hilariously named episode, The Ballad of Gay Tony, you play
Luis, an ex-con who happens to be Tony’s right hand man and
business partner. Luis seems like the kind of person
who wouldn’t have much to do with a guy like Tony in the
first place; however Tony has become an almost fatherlike
figure to the grateful Luis who is more than capable of
making sure Tony stays out of trouble. The Lost and the
Damned concentrated on the gritty hardcore streets of
Liberty; Ballad exists on the other end of the spectrum by
focusing on the glamorous nightlight full of drugs, women
and neon. Liberty City seems to be as diverse a place
as anywhere else on the globe and to actually capture that
very essence is clear proof that Rockstar are the masters of
their craft.

Although
I enjoyed the Ballad of Gay Tony more than the Lost and the
Damned because of how playful some of the missions are,
other missions can be nothing more than serving as a simple
driver helping someone get from A to B which is a bit lame
considering how many times we’ve done stuff like that
before. I can’t put my
finger on it but for some reason I just thought this was a
better episode even if it is a little rougher around the
edge in the narrative.
One great
thing about this episode is that once you have a completed a
mission you can replay it by selecting it from your mobile
phone. You have certain objectives to meet, such as
making so many headshots, completing the mission is a
certain amount of time etc, and you can then upload the
results via the social club which gives Gay Tony a lot more
replay value.
He probably thinks
the world is his when its clearly
mine!
With both
of these episodes on one disc you really can’t go
wrong. It’s cheaper than a full release and you’re
getting an entire game’s worth of content by having these
two together. There are fantastic weapons and vehicles
to unlock and although the tank was a bit underwhelming, you
have excellent side missions and activities such as base
jumping and stunts. I really can’t get enough of it and
am a little bit saddened to think that this is the last time
we’ll get to play in Liberty City for a while; at least it
was a great ride while it lasted.
I loved
the presentation, the graphics, the characters, come on you
know that a GTA game (or expansion/episode for that matter)
is worth your attention. If you haven’t
already checked out either one of these I suggest you do
so. They are every bit as good as Niko’s story and
expand the GTA universe
perfectly.
It might
be getting on in age but GTA is still the best there is –
Episodes from Liberty City is another reason to prove my
argument. If you already have Lost and the Damned,
Ballad of Gay Tony is also available for download otherwise
get this disc!
