Fallout 3: Mothership Zeta Review

It’s the game that just keeps on giving

Experienced Fallout players will no doubt be aware of a crashed UFO that is sending out a distress signal somewhere out there in the wastelands, well the latest DLC from Bethesda for Fallout 3 sees the aliens coming to answer that distress call, and you’re in for a ride on the mother ship.

You begin by being abducted and prepped for anal probing but of course being the badass wasteland wanderer you are, you’re not about to accept that.  You’re going to have to show the aliens what Earthlings are made of and make it back home, although why you wouldn’t try to find a paradise instead of a nuclear ridden planet is anyone’s guess, there truly must be no place like home.

 As cool as this sounds, unfortunately the majority of this expansion focuses on combat, similar to Operation Anchorage.   You will spend most of the time roaming from hallway to hallway taking down scores of aliens as you fight your way to the captain’s bridge.  It really is just a dungeon crawl in outer space. 

There are some wonderful scenes which have you space walking, but on the whole, Mothership Zeta is about doing away with the aliens until you get to the end.  There is no expansion on your level cap and the additional goodies that you usually walk away with are pretty minimal.  I did have a lot of fun playing it but once it’s over, it’s over.  There are a couple of new weapons to find but apart from that it will only take you a couple of hours before it’s all over.  If you think it’s worth the price (and I do) and you’re after the complete Fallout experience, by all means download this expansion, just don’t expect the same level of quality and polish as DLC like Broken Steel or The Pitt.

Sadly, this is the last expansion planned for Fallout 3.  Even though they have put out more content than just about any game before it, I really wished they would just keep putting stuff out there.  I just adore everything to do with Fallout 3 and after I finished Mothership Zeta I was a little sad that this was the end of one of the greatest adventures of my gaming life.
