Sometimes it takes a game like Dragon Age: Origins to remind me that being a geek is quite often a pleasant thing to be. Elves, dwarves, noble knights and dragons are the bread and butter of geekdom and Bioware definitely knows where their bread is buttered by making such an epic RPG that will appeal to us hardcore fantasy nerds. It has a big budget, some magnificent set pieces and impressive gameplay that make Dragon Age one of this year’s most moving RPGs.

Depending on what class of character, race etc, will determine your ‘origin’ story.  Each different set of options to pick will create a story that will be very different from what would happen if you were to choose a different type of character.   Whatever race, character or abilities you choose, the recurring theme seems to be that you will have to defeat the Darkspawn, demon-like creatures that are closer to killer zombies than orcs, and join the elite class of warriors known as the Grey Wardens.  

As you progress through the tale, you’ll pick up extra members to your party.  Some are memorable, others are less so, others play a bigger role in your story while others barely change any outcomes, it really all belongs to you.  I know I’m probably sounding a little vague but it’s because of several things, I don’t want to give away any spoilers and if I go into complete detail I would end up with a ten thousand word review.   Dragon Age: Origins is a huge freaking game!  It’s as epic as Mass Effect; it’s as geeky as D&D and still manages to have the ability to appeal to your everyday man.  Who doesn’t like RPGs that can last for months on end?

I think the easiest way to describe Dragon Age would be to use Mass Effect as a comparison.  Grey Wardens are like spectres, Darkspawn are the Geth, you have a whole world to save.  It is old but you’re not going to find another way to beat it as the conclusion is satisfying depending on what story you play.  Unlike Mass Effect the story elements have a lot more complexity to the arch and progression.   Dragon Age is quite possibly one of the most epic fantasy games I’ve played since…well Mass Effect, which also happens to be another Bioware classic.  

The only thing that saddens me a little is that after creating such a well made RPG, Bioware limp along on crutches that have been made out of all the fantasy novels you’ve likely ever read.  I can understand why they would do this because it made me feel almost instantly familiar with the surroundings, classes and species, but it just feels like a little bit of a rip off of things like Lord of the Rings.  If you can look past this and get into the story, you’ll have a blast, just don’t expect to find the most original plot(s) ever made.  For myself personally, well I’m a massive geek and I don’t care who knows it, this game was made for moi!

Graphics…well it’s probably the biggest criticism I can give this game. Some of the textures are a little muddy, there is some slowdown and pop-in, and you know the usual suspects.  Does it look ugly? Hell no!  Does it look as pretty as Mass Effect? Also hell no!  This isn’t an ugly game, it’s just a game with a lot crammed into it and with so much going on I’m sure there had to be a few restrictions and it seems that graphics was the area that drew the short straw.  Does this really matter?  For the third time, hell no because Dragon Age has more going on in the story and gameplay department then 90 percent of RPGs that have come out before it.  This is an epic adventure that you can sink time into and completely forget where you are.  Its one of those games that can draw you in and before you know, the sun is coming up.  

The excellent script, player options, story, acting, score, gameplay easily point this game into one of the best RPGs released this year.  It sits only second to Demon’s Souls as far as I’m concerned.  And if the massive amounts of included content weren’t enough, there are quests that can be downloaded through Xbox Live already!

Whether you’re a geek who wants to triumphantly fist pump the air as you take down legions of Darkspawn and the occasional dragon, this game is tailor made for you. If you’re the type of person who hasn’t played an RPG before but wants a recommended starting point, go for Dragon Age: Origins, you just might like how a decent RPG feels
